Handmade Soft-Sculpture Sleeping Baby Doll
1980s handmade soft-sculpture baby, needle-sculpted sleeping face
A beautifully made handmade soft-sculpture baby, the kind a serious crafter turned out one at a time in the early '80s. Her whole face is needle-sculpted — closed sleeping eyes with hand-embroidered lashes, a soft little nose, a small red smile — and the sculpting carries all the way down to individual fingers, toes, dimpled knees and a belly button. Pale yellow loop-curl yarn hair frames the whole thing. She still has her complete original outfit: a cream sprig-print pinafore, matching ruffled bloomers with lace trim, and two matching tie-on booties. Unsigned, no maker's mark anywhere — one of a kind. Honest condition: this is a fair-condition doll and priced that way. There's a worn spot with a small hole on the bottom of one foot (photographed close up), light age soiling and a few small marks on the body, and the fabric has mellowed to a warm cream. Body is firm, all seams sound, hair fully attached, and no repairs have been made. Sold as found. From a Washington Parish, Louisiana estate.
